It was 1992.
There I was in my very first year of teaching, sitting at my desk at the end of the day, wondering how I was going to make all of this work teaching 4th grade at North Springfield Elementary School in Fairfax County, VA.
I had Rory, who asked to go to the bathroom every 30 minutes.
I had Kevin, who was so disorganized that even when he did his homework, he couldn’t find it when I called on him to turn it in.
I had Sarah, who was performing 3 grade levels ahead in math.
I had Catherine, who was incredibly motivated, but she had such a hard time with anxiety, when I called on her to answer a question she could barely get her words out.
And I had Mariano, another smart kid, but a very reluctant reader. How could I possibly figure out how to give all of them what they needed?
It was only after I took on my very first student as a tutor, later on that year, that I realized that it wasn’t lack of motivation, or some fundamental inability to do well in school that was holding kids back… but that it was actually a very specific set of habits, routines, and anxieties that they had (unknowingly) developed at some point along the way.
And after taking on more and more students after that first year, and working with them not only on the subjects they were struggling in, but also on the organization, time management, and study skills they lacked… incredibly, after we worked through those challenges, those kids actually started to ENJOY learning! And their grades improved along with it.
At that point, I realized this was my calling in life.
Since then, I’ve spent my career dedicated to helping families deal with the daily stress of school, homework, getting into college, and everything in-between.
Through my tutoring and test prep company, Educational Connections.
Through my award-winning books and online resources.
Through my media appearances.
And through my speaking.
Thankfully, success in school is something that, in most cases, is actually right around the corner.
You don’t have to nag, discipline, or get an education degree to do it… You just have to know how.
If you have questions, feedback, or would like to book me as a speaker for one of your upcoming events, contact me here, or call me at 703-934-8282.
